As a new learner driver you should be aware that if you learn to drive and pass your test in an automatic gearbox car then your license, once issued, will only cover the use of vehicle fitted with an automatic gearbox and you would need to re-take an additional test if you wished to drive a vehicle with a manual gearbox. Pupils passing their driving test in a manual car are free to drive an automatic or manual vehicle.

Even today automatic cars are often slightly more expensive than manual cars, although the price difference between the two has narrowed considerably.

Whilst anyone with a license issued in a manual car is licensed to drive an automatic vehicle, many people still find the conversion and specific skills difficult to master.
